February is African-American History Month

So all month long we are celebrating with Read Alouds and some Guided Reading groups focusing on leaders from 2 big time periods in history with slavery and the Civil Rights Movement.  We are going to be learning about incredible LEADERS who were African-Americans, that helped change our country.

Tuck Everlasting

Our literature group has started reading the new story, Tuck Everlasting.  It is an interesting idea that has our kids questioning.....what if you could live forever?  We can't wait to find out more about this interesting family, the Tucks.

We continue our work in our Reader's Notebook for Character Traits, Vocabulary and Summaries.

Happy New Year!

We are back from break and continuing our Diary of a Wimpy Kid book with the January chapter!  Chilly temps gave us a 2 hour delay so it was nice to ease back into the routine!!  We will also be connecting our Science with Reading Weather informational books in this unit so get prepared to bundle up!!!  Winter weather is upon us!!!
Our literature circle readers are reading A Penny's Worth of Character and learning about a Kentucky author--  Jesse Stuart!  They may recognize many of the things described in the story and be able to do compare/contrast to life for the main character (Shan) as compared to life now.  We will also be comparing the author's opinion on honesty from their own, with this story.

The MOST WONDERFUL time of the year!

It is definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here!  A sneaky elf has arrived giving much excitement to our boys and girls and appearing in new places each day!

We are also getting festive with our reading as we enjoy The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and do some comparing and contrasting with a Social Studies unit on Christmas Around the World!  Exciting!

Author Study: Chris Van Allsburg and INFERENCING

We have started an author study on Chris Van Allsburg and are using it in Writer's Workshop as well as Read Aloud to help us connect reading and writing skills!  We are learning to INFER!  This is a BIG Reading Skill that we work on in 3rd grade!!!

The students LOVE the stories and are so eager to read them each day!  Our writing is improving also because when we read excellent, mentor texts--we learn to MODEL our writing from the authors!  Each story is so captivating and Mr. Van Allsburg has a brilliant way of weaving thought provoking ideas into his stories!  We are gleaning so much from each one and the students can't wait to INFER from each story!!

Our Literature Circle Book Club group has started the delicious book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!  We are working on our Reading strategies in our Reader's Notebook and writing main ideas and details for each chapter.  We are also working on Vocabulary as we learn some delightful new words as only author Roald Dahl can teach us!  This author helps us VISUALIZE because he writes with such vivid details!  He is a great author to help us learn to be better writers!
