Our Literature Circle Book Club group has started the delicious book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!  We are working on our Reading strategies in our Reader's Notebook and writing main ideas and details for each chapter.  We are also working on Vocabulary as we learn some delightful new words as only author Roald Dahl can teach us!  This author helps us VISUALIZE because he writes with such vivid details!  He is a great author to help us learn to be better writers!

Because of Winn Dixie

This week we started in our next literature circle book, Because of Winn Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo.  It is part of an author study we do in third grade and it is always one of the kids' favorite stories!  We have MAP testing soon also.  We will be doing work in our Reader's Notebook with this unit in Reading.  Students will be working on

  • character traits with evidence from the text to support
  • setting/plot and theme
  • character's actions and sequence of story events
  • compare and contrast (characters, events, settings)

Our literacy strategies include:
  •  Making Connections
  • Predicting

Our first day kicks off with this adorable book and activities, then we will move into a delightful chapter book, Freckle Juice!  It's a nice, light chapter book that always kicks off an author study that we do in third grade- Judy Blume.  It's also a great starter book to get everyone trying our very first literacy strategy- MAKING CONNECTIONS and learning to identify CHARACTER TRAITS!  You will have to see what Andrew is willing to do to get freckles!

It's February and that means it's time for us to study and celebrate a special time in our history with Famous African-Americans!  We are studying 2 particular time periods (slavery and the Civil Rights Movement).  We are also focusing our Read Alouds this month on stories of courage and heroism from leaders in both of these time periods.
