Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Our next author study is Jeff Kinney who has a very enjoyable and funny series with Diary of a Wimpy Kid!!  The students are all set with their GOALS and our Reader's Notebooks work!  This story is loaded with of IDIOMS and the students will be INFERRING their meaning.  We will also use graphic organizers to help us determine IMPORTANCE of details as we select MAIN IDEAS for each chapter to help us RETELL events.  This is a very funny series and I was able to purchase 2 copies of the newest book in this series for my classroom library and I can tell you--it is already a HOT CHOICE!!!  The students are doing great about sharing it around.  If you check this month's book order, the newest book is available!  This will probably be on many student's Christmas List this year!  ;)

The Global Read Aloud Project

Because of Winn Dixie

We have started our next chapter book with another author study, Kate DiCamillo and the story, Because of Winn -Dixie.  We continue to work in our Reader's Notebooks and learn to use Literacy Strategies (MAKING CONNECTIONS, PREDICT, ASK QUESTIONS, INFER).  We also continue to identify literary elements (such as character, setting, plot, and theme).  We also continue to practice the skills of compare/contrast, summarize and sequencing.  The students are writing paragraph summaries for each chapter of the book.  We are enjoying this heart warming story!

We are also meeting with students individually to set GOALS and look over MAP scores.  Students are now expected to record their reading log for all library books they check out and read at home or at school.  They are also taking tests with Scholastic Reading Counts independently.  This sheer volume of reading on level books will help move them forward!

Gearing up for Fourth Grade!

We were so touched by the ending of Eggs!!  The students identified so many comparisons between the characters, setting, theme and plot of both Eggs and Tiger Rising.

We are now gearing up for fourth grade with the delightful Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing!  This closes our Judy Blume author study and brings us full circle, as we started the year with Freckle Juice!  Tales will be such a humorous way to end the year that has been a Miraculous Journey of growth and learning!!
