The Global Read Aloud Project

We will be participating in The Global Read Aloud  and reading the book, The Year of Billy Miller, by Kevin Henkes.  This is his first chapter book and we already do an author study with his picture books, so we are very excited to see what his chapter book is about!.

Because of Winn Dixie

We have started our next chapter book with another author study, Kate DiCamillo and the story, Because of Winn -Dixie.  We continue to work in our Reader's Notebooks and learn to use Literacy Strategies (MAKING CONNECTIONS, PREDICT, ASK QUESTIONS, INFER).  We also continue to identify literary elements (such as character, setting, plot, and theme).  We also continue to practice the skills of compare/contrast, summarize and sequencing.  The students are writing paragraph summaries for each chapter of the book.  We are enjoying this heart warming story!

We are also meeting with students individually to set GOALS and look over MAP scores.  Students are now expected to record their reading log for all library books they check out and read at home or at school.  They are also taking tests with Scholastic Reading Counts independently.  This sheer volume of reading on level books will help move them forward!
