Christmas!

We are currently reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, by Barbara Robinson.  We have also been doing a school wide unit on Christmas Around the World.  The students are enjoying making predictions and identifying sarcasm in the story and they worked hard on our school display of Christmas in Spain for our school project!  There has been much to compare and contrast with the various cultural celebrations of Christmas!

Author Study and INFERENCING!

We have started an author study on Chris Van Allsburg and are using it in Writer's Workshop as well as Read Aloud to help us connect reading and writing skills!  We are learning to INFER (and getting quite skilled at it, if I might add! :)

The students LOVE the stories and are so eager to read them each day!  Our writing is improving also because when we read excellent, mentor texts--we learn to MODEL our writing from the authors!  Each story is so captivating and Mr. Van Allsburg has a brilliant way of weaving thought provoking ideas into his stories!  We are gleaning so much from each one and the students can't wait to INFER from each story!!

It's a DOG PARTY!!!

We have finished our book, Because of Winn Dixie AND met another horseshoe goal so we are CELEBRATING with a DOG PARTY!!!

What fun!!!

Drama Week with LCT!

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Drama in Residency Week with Lexington Children's Theatre!  We have been working on compare/contrast and main ideas and details as students also prepared to act our scenes from the story, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs!

What fun!  We also enjoyed performing for our 2nd grade class down the hall on Friday  and having them VOTE on the verdict!  Turns out--they think the Wolf was guilty!

Because of Winn Dixie

This week we started in our next literature circle book, Because of Winn Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo.  It is part of an author study we do in third grade and it is always one of the kids' favorite stories!  We had MAP testing, so we didn't get as far in the story this week, but we will be doing work in our Reader's Notebook with this unit in Reading.  Students will be working on

  • character traits with evidence from the text to support
  • setting/plot and theme
  • character's actions and sequence of story events
  • compare and contrast (characters, events, settings)

Our literacy strategies include:
  •  Making Connections
  • Predicting
  • Visualizing
  • Asking Questions
  • Inferring
  • Determining Importance

Welcome BACK!!!

We are so excited to get started with another WONDERFUL school year in third grade!!

We begin the year with a delightful chapter book, Freckle Juice!  It's a nice, light chapter book that always kicks off an author study that we do in third grade- Judy Blume.  It's also a great starter book to get everyone trying our very first literacy strategy- MAKING CONNECTIONS and learning to identify CHARACTER TRAITS!  You will have to see what Andrew is willing to do to get freckles!
